Boxing Club

Richard Steele Boxing Club is open to at risk youth in Henderson, Nevada as well as the surrounding Las Vegas area. This program is currently designed to provide 300 to 600 youths, per year, ages 8 to 18 with USA boxing regulation competition in the sport of boxing and international Karate competition. It is for all age level competition and training, with the possible eventual aspiration of Olympic and/or professional boxing in the future but with the specific goal of empowering and inspiring children to gain a respect for the strategy of problem solving through a respect for qualitative improvement of thinking and understanding through training (education).

Our program has a four-prong approach. The first is a youth must work on educational skill upgrades. Having report cards submitted to Club staff or volunteers at enrollment and periodically through the year, tutorial sessions, and contact with the student’s teacher, counselor and parents … completes this. Academic improvement must be shown in order to participate in any youth program. Students are required to submit progress reports on a regular basis. Each youth must maintain a “C” or better grade average and/or show improvement in areas that were below grade level of at least three points per semester.

The second prong of our youth program is participation in regimented physical training, discipline and instruction a youth receives to “Put Prevention into Practice” (PPIP). Nutrition, multi-joint exercises and safe personal training help a youth understand the importance of physical activity for life long health and wellness therefore preventing disease states. Researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently documented The United States has seen a decrease in the number of children who are physically active and an increase in the number of children who are overweight. Nearly half of young people aged 12-21 years in the United States are not vigorously active on a regular basis. About 14% of young people report no recent physical activity. Over the past 30 years the percent of overweight children aged 6 to 11 years has more than doubled.

Through competitions , youth travel to events in various cities and states. They are exposed to other parts of the nation as well as other people. It shows them what they can attain through academic achievement and organized sports/groups. As part of the youth component, the Club is exposing its youth to other community activities, such as live theater and museums. Trips for these types of activities are important in building community awareness, life skills training and citizenship. It gives the youth exposure to other lifestyles away from the high-risk neighborhoods in which they live. A program evaluation questionnaire is given to each student at the beginning and at bi-annual intervals which will include a test for community awareness, outlook on life and future goal orientation.

The third prong of the boxing program is Family Night. Family Night is run by parents and supported by the college of coaches of the Richard Steele Boxing Club. The meetings are held the second and third Thursdays at 4:00 p.m. at the Richard Steele Boxing Club. The meetings are held to determine the awards that will be given on family night and the lecture that shall take place as well as suggestions to improve parent participation. This will include workshops and seminars of drug prevention, teen pregnancy, gang prevention, anger management, stress management, violence alternatives and other community awareness activities. In this way family members are always participating in the way services are provided to them.

The fourth prong of our youth programs are mentoring. Each participant is assigned to a mentor. This provides avenues for exchange of positive ideas. Each student that is in need of a tutor will be assigned a professional tutor and provided a room from which to teach. Most of these tutors are themselves on the UNLV Boxing Team.

Richard Steele Boxing Club is a 501C3 non profit organization in which donations are tax deductible.
